Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta, Eastern Comma Polygonia c-album, Western Comma Polygonia satyrus, Blomfild’s Beauty Smyrna blomfildia, Milbert’s Tortoiseshell Aglais milberti, Small Tortoiseshell Aglais urticae, and Question Mark Polygonia interrogationis butterflies host on nettles in the US.
Yellow Admirals Vanessa itea host on nettle in New Zealand.
‘Nettles’ refers to plants in the Urtica tribe of plants. At least some of these butterflies also host on false nettle, Boehmeria cylindrica, which is in the same family of plants, Urticaceae.
