Butterfly and Moth Disease Issues

Disease is one of nature’s methods to prevent butterfly and moth populations from going extinct.  How?  Butterfly disease helps keeps butterfly species alive.

Let’s look at some diseases that we find in nature.

Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, knows as NPV, is also called ‘melt’.  After a caterpillar contracts this virus, it turns to dark stinking odorous liquid.

Fungus often attacks moths and butterflies.  Both caterpillars and adult moths are spotted sitting on a leaf, killed by a fungus.  Butterfly caterpillars can also die from fungus.
