Cofaqui Giant Skipper butterflies are found in portions of Florida.
I have never taken a photo of a Cofaqui Skipper butterfly adult. We have seen their eggs, eggshells, and exit holes. We hope to, one day, find the adult near the host plants that we visit every spring.
This skipper butterfly has several host plants. Both Adam’s Needle and Spanish Bayonet are favorites of this butterfly.
The caterpillar hatches from its egg and bores into the stem and root of the plant. The caterpillar makes a tunnel and pupates in the tunnel. The chrysalis can move up and down the tunnel. In the spring, the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.
Both Adam’s Needle, also called Bear Grass, and Spanish Bayonet are found in nurseries. Both are popular landscape plants. Spanish Bayonet is a dangerous plant for yards with people. The tips of the leaves are extremely sharp and will break off in the skin.
